Who are you? And why are you interested in my grandmother, Ida Cecilia Leaman Simpson? I am Peggy Stanley (Mary Margaret O'Neill Stanley) and I am the eldest daughter of Ida's eldest daughter, Mary Comeford Simpson O'Neill. My grandmother, Ida, died in 1982 and her husband, my grandfather, died in 1959. Ida never remarried. Ida and John had five children: Mary, John, Ann, Joan, and Ralph. My mother, Mary, died in 1997. Her four siblings are all still living. Needless to say, I would be most interested in trading information with you. (I'd love to fill in some of the holes in family tree.) Would you be interested in doing this?

Hi Tim,
Your website is quite interesting.
I grew up in Madison Co., NC and have the Jarrett - Roberson - O'Dell - Sprinkle - Davis generations in my database. (I have 15,560 individuals) I am a descendant of Cecil Sprinkle and Mary Roberson.
I have the Madison and Buncombe county Sprinkle's researched back to the original Sprinkle settlers in "Old Buncombe county" which at the time was actually the Gabriel's Creek area of Mars Hill.
My favorite hobby is genealogy. I have 34 genealogy reference books for Madison and some for Buncombe County. I access families in the delayed birth, marriage, death certificate indexes, obituaries and cemetery books and hard copy of 1900 Madison County census. I have online subscriptions to federal census, state death indexes and SSDI.
Aubrey is my 2nd cousin, once removed.

George Eli Roberson, Sr.'s wife is Hattie Jarrett. I never hear her referred to as Harriett. Her death certificate, cemetery listing and obituary are Hattie. George and Hattie were a handsome couple. Hattie's mother, Sarah also had an interesting face.Their son George, Jr. inherited the farm overlooking the French Broad River. Mildred and Mary were educated at Fruitland Institute. Mildred was a registered nurse.
Jesse Sprinkle and Laura Jarrett: Laura was born 1870 Jesse is spelled Jessie on his headstone Cinda was Lucinda and she was called Cindy.

31. Jeanne Jarrett, “Jarrett Family,” 11/4/2003, Tim Jarrett’s records.
I looked up my name, Jeanne Jarrett. I have additional information if you want it. My father was Jones Eli Jarrett, born July 12, 1921 and died June 14, 1970. My mother is Maxine Whitt Jarrett, born October 19, 1923. My twin sister, Joyce Jarrett Staubs, and I were born on May 15, 1947 in Miami, Florida. Our younger brother, Terrence Eli Jarrett was born on November 4, 1952 in Riverdale, Maryland. My sister was married on February 14, 1976 to Ralph Arthur Staubs, nickname “Butch.” Butch died on November 7, 1979. Their son, Joel Eli Staubs was born onMay 6, 1979. My brother, Terry, was married to Karen Elaine Hoskins on August 19, 1978. They have two children: Jason Bradley Eli Jarrett, born February 5, 1980 and Jennalee Elaine Jarrett, born on December 2, 1983. Incidentally, my grandmother was Minnie Belle Jones Jarrett. I don’t know the exact date she and my grandfather were married. I do know they eloped to Spartanburg, South Carolina, probably in 1902 or 1903. Unfortunately, the official recorded data for that period is unavailable. Thanks so much for all the Jarrett family information. If I have more information on down the line, I’ll send it along.

Hi Tim,
Your website is quite interesting.

47. Susan Booker, “About James Patton and his family,” 9/2/2003, Tim Jarrett.
Hello, Tim-
I'm glad you enjoyed the info re Rachel Jarrett Patton - here is the link to the site about her brother-in-law, James Patton. His autobiography makes for fascinating reading, but doesn't contain any material about Rachel other than to note that James's brother Daniel Patton married her. It incorrectly states that they had two children - there were three, James Grimes, Sarah, and Catherine (I may have the order of the girls wrong, but James G. was the eldest). After the three children were married or widowed young adults, they continued to live side by side and are listed in the Coffee County census for 1840, the two sisters living together next to their brother James G. Patton. Somewhere I have a bit more about the girls' families - one married and moved to Texas, where her husband died. She returned to Tennessee and lived with her sister, and later remarried to a man from Kentucky. I do have more information about James Grimes Patton, my g-grandfather, who was married twice, to Harriet C. Ross and later to my g-grandmother, Mary Caroline Hunter. He had five children by his first marriage and nine by his second, as I may have written you - his youngest child was my grandmother, Susie Alice Patton (Bassett). Forgive my seeming forgetfulness, but I sent two very similar messages about the Patton family to different people, almost simultaneously, and I can't recall who received what!
Hope you enjoy this material - good to hear from you.
Best wishes, Susan Booker Lexington, KY

Hello, Tim-
It was good to discover your weblog and Jarrett family genealogy. Rachel Jarrett was my g-g-grandmother. She was married to Daniel Patton, brother of the well-known James Patton of County Derry, Ireland, and Asheville, NC - James's autobiography is online as part of the University of NC's "American South" series.
Daniel Patton and Rachel Jarrett Patton moved to what was then Bedford County, TN, around 1807, along with Daniel's brother Thomas Patton and his family. Rachel and Daniel had three children, not two, as some records incorrectly read: James Grimes Patton, Sarah Patton, and Catherine Patton. Rachel died when the children were in their teens, as she and Daniel Patton had married rather late in life, and Daniel died a few years later, leaving two minor daughters, a son of twenty, and no will. Guardianship of the two young girls was assigned to their first cousin Neely Shaw Patton, son of Thomas, presumably as he had children near the same age and lived nearby on Noah's Fork of the Duck River in what is now northern Coffee County, TN. James G. Patton, my g-grandfather, married a few months after his father's death.
There is an old abandoned Patton Family Cemetery near Noah (a wide spot in the road), just across the road from Thomas Patton's old farm, which is still rural but was for sale as of late March, 2003. Thomas Patton, his wife Jane Shaw Patton, and a number of their descendents rest here. At Thomas and Jane's feet are two graves marked only by fieldstones. My strong suspicion is that these are the resting places of Daniel and Rachel Jarrett Patton, and that fieldstones were all that their children could manage for them.
James G. Patton married twice, first to Harriet C. Ross, daughter of Rice Farrar Ross, and secondly to my g-grandmother, Mary Caroline Hunter. He had 14 children, five by Harriet and the rest by my g-grandmother. My grandmother, Susie Alice Patton, was his youngest child. His sisters also married and had children, but I do not have full information about them and their descendents.
Hope this is helpful - always nice to discover an online cousin!
The West Asheville neighborhood is working to preserve the historic Jarrett House at 46 Louisiana Ave. The house, built in the 1890s, is of architectural interest. Cabins and Castles reports, “Thomas Jarrett was a millwright at the Clayton Mill and did much of the work on the house himself.”
Thomas, born in 1855 in Buncombe County, was the son of James Montraville Jarrett (1823-1909), who married Loucinda Owenbey (1835-1901). James was a colonel in the Civil War with the 190th North Carolina Militia. He was the son of Noah Jarrett and Betsy Israel Jarrett. In the records the Jarrett name is variously spelled as Garett, Jarrat, Jarret and Jaret.
Thomas Jarrett married Catherine Aiken in 1875. She was born in 1859 and died in 1946. Thomas died in 1895. They are buried in the Jarrett Cemetery that is adjacent to, and accessible through, Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville. The 1925 Asheville City Directory lists Catherine Jarrett widow of T. C. at 46 Louisiana Ave., West Asheville.
These Jarretts are descended from Daniel Jarrett, born in Pennsylvania, 1747, who married Mary Catherine Moyers there. Daniel’s father was John Jarrett who married Anna Maria and received a land grant in Macungie, Pa., in 1735 where they raised their family. Daniel and Mary Catherine moved to that area of Mecklenburg County, N.C., now known as Cabarrus County. Daniel’s name is found in many Mecklenburg Court Records. They lived briefly in that part of Burke County now known as McDowell County. Then they settled in Buncombe County. Noah Jarrett was one of their ten children.
Sondley’s History of Buncombe County tells of early Jarretts who were active in the county government. John Jarrett was one of the commissioners appointed to carry out the plan for the town of Asheville. William Patton Jarrett, the son of Noah, and his family moved to Gilmer County, Ga. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as Captain of Company F, 60th Regiment of the Gilmer County Volunteers. This family eventually moved back to North Carolina and settled in Cherokee County. Then they moved to Clay County and established a farm where they remained.
A new book by Elizabeth Walton, “Jarrett: Pennsylvania to North Carolina and Beyond,” about these Jarretts is dedicated to William Patton Jarrett and his service to Gilmer County in the Civil War. The author recorded information from many sources so the Jarrett story might not be lost, “for they are worth remembering.” For more information about this new book, contact Elizabeth Walton, PO Box 623, Social Circle, GA 30025 Other sources used in writing this article: Kenneth Israel, “The Children of Israel;” Kenneth Israel and Evelyn Campbell, “Joshua Jones of the Misty Blue Mountains;” “Heritage Book of Old Buncombe County, Vol. 1.”

I think Moses Freeman, married to Betsy Ramsey might be a nephew to Rev. Moses Freeman instead of a son.Probate records of an Isaac Freeman b about 1790 in N. Carolina d 1855 in Newton County Arkansas shows Moses Freeman , of Madison County N.Carolina, inhereting Isaac Freeman's property in Newton County. Hi,
I found your website today while doing a search on the Freeman name. Found my gr-grandfather in your listings. James J. Freeman according to his pension papers was married 4 times. His second wife you have listed as Margaret Furgeson, she was married before to a Furgeson. Her maiden name is Wilson. If the census I have found is correct her father is Harvey Wilson b. 1799. She was born 6 Nov 1849 in TN. They were married 8 Dec. 1872, she died 1876 in Flat Rock, Pulaski County, Kentucky, possibly in childbirth. Since this is the marriage I descend from thought I would update you.

I went to that town library that you spoke of in your journal. I didn't meet Cinzia but I met Maria Acocella, nice lady! The first time I went, I stayed for a week with my cousins and the second time, I stayed for 4 or 5 days. I had a wonderful time each time.

Seth:
Thanks for the update! I'm always glad to hear from another Freeman descendant, especially one who's still living in the area. By the way, my father and uncle both are living in Buncombe County, on property near Bear Creek.
I have been hunting down cemeteries in Buncombe but haven't found the Freeman cemetery in Madison yet. Where is it located?
76. B. MacKie, “Re: Rice Farrar Ross,” 2/9/2004, Tim Jarrett.
Hi, There was a huge migration from Lincoln County, NC and Spartenburg, SC to Bedford County, TN about 1807 because of a drought. My McKisick ancestors, as well as Pattons, and Rice and his family all moved about the same time. I also have Pattons. My gg grandmother was Louisa Patton, daughter of William and Margaret Wright Patton. One of my McKisick ancestors married a David Patton in Bedford County. Other families who migrated were Dixons (Dicksons), McEwens, and McMichaels.
Below are some miscellaneous deed records as well as a list of the children of Rice and Sarah. I have a copy of two letters written by their daughter, Sophronia Ross McMichael. Also one by their son, Absalom Bonham Ross. Sarah was the daughter of Absalom and Rebecca Cox Bonham. Sarah's sister Rebecca was my ggg grandmother.

From the Echols book by Milner Echols.
"Old William Echols daughters married William Wynne, Vardre McBee and Daniel Williams and Richard Anderson. Of Wynne’s family I know nothing as they moved to Tennessee in an early date. Old Vardre McBee moved from Virginia to South Carolina before the Revolutionary War and was a Capt. In that army and was said to have done as much damage to the British and Torries in that part of the country as any Capt. In that country. He had two sons, to wit, Silas and Vardre. Silas was a very large man, went to Mississippi and died there. I know nothing of his family. Vardre still lives in South Carolina, Greenville District. He has six children, only one married, that a daughter, married a Mr. Carson. He has one daughter Malinda single, one son Luther, the rest I don’t know their names. He is said to be the richest man in that part of the state. His property is estimated at one million dollars. Old Vardre has several daughters. I don’t know their names. One married a man by name of Ross. How many children she had I know not. I only know one of her sons who is by name of Rice F. Ross. One married a man by name of Asher. They have one son in Dade County, Georgia, by name of William Asher, a very smart man. That is all I know of that family."

My 4th great-grandfaher, Larkin Sams was the son of Benoni Sams, not John Sams. The children of Benoni Sams are proved in the St. Clair co., MO Circut Court Records, Page 254: October Term AD 1850 in the Petition for Partition of the real estate of Burdett Sams, deceased, brother of Benoni Sams.
